Melton Mowbray Pork Pies. PGI.

Melton Mowbray Pork PiesPGI 2008

As mentioned previously my family are Butchers, on my rounds delivering to many Butchers in the Northeast I became a bit of an expert on Pork Pies. It wasn’t unusual to recieve a pie of hot dip sandwich from the Butcher after a delivery and all the drivers knew who made the best ones.

Melton Mowbray pies take some beating though. Whey as by product of cheese production (see Stilton) was an ideal food for Pigs so Pork became a big part of the local diet.

The Pie has evolved from Pork cooked in a clay pot with a rough pastery top to the meaty parcel it is today. In older times the pastry was just to protect the meat and would’ve been discarded by the workers and, huntsman that favoured the Pork meat.

As the pastry improved in taste and quality it too became part of the meal. It was very popular with local and visiting huntsman, the bone stock jelly ensured the pork meat was preserved and the pie didn’t disintergrate in ones pockets while out on the hunt. If you are a Pork pie fan like myself a trip to the Melton Mowbray Festival is a must.

You can buy pies direct from these Butchers. Far better than most of the Supermarket pies.
