Now this isn’t a PDO, PGI or TSG, you can’t even buy it anywhere (as far as I know) I just wanted to share the joy. February, March and April this delicious morsel grows wild in hills and mountains around Valencia and Castellon (propbably grows elsewhere but this is where I’ve picked it). It looks like tame Asparagus but skinny and leggy. If left growing too long the stems shoot off and at each bud sprouts like a fern frongs.
The taste is shop asparagus times twenty. It cooks in seconds, I like to chop it and chuck it in my scrambled eggs or an omelette or just dry cooked, on a plate with Olive oil and Manchego melting on top, it is simply delicious. There is one draw back, green and rather pungent pee, worth it though.
This time of year is also Almond blossom time the mountain valleys are full of pink and white blossom with the smell of marzipan drifting through the air. If you fancy a trip try my mate Rob’s B and B in the Mountains of Serra de’n Galceran the views to med are breathtaking.
